Hello there, 👋

Earlier this week, Ministry of Health announced significant changes to Integrated Shield Plan Riders ("IP Riders"). These updates will impact how much you pay out-of-pocket when hospitalised.

In summary, the new IP Riders will

  1. No longer cover the deductible, that is, the "first portion" of the medical bill that you must pay before insurance kicks in,
  2. Have a higher co-payment cap of $6,000 per policy year, and
  3. Be cheaper than the existing IP Riders.

What does this mean to you?

If you are an existing IP Rider policyholder before 27 November 2025, you are not affected yet. The insurer will review their approach and inform you in time to come.

What if You purchase an IP Rider now?

You may continue to enjoy the coverage under the existing terms and conditions. However, you will transit to the new IP Rider by April 2028.

Should You cancel your IP Rider now?

If you value the coverage from your IP Rider, keep the plan active for now. Let's review again once the insurers provide more information (probably sometime around March next year).

What is the cost difference between the existing IP Riders with maximum coverage and the upcoming IP Rider?

About 30% on average.

What is the difference between your out-of-pocket cost when hospitalised?

$6,500.

The current IP Rider covers the deductible (up to $3,500) and typically caps the co-payment at $3,000 per policy year. As a result, your maximum out-of-pocket cost is $3,000 per policy year.

The new IP Rider does not cover the deductible and caps the co-payment at $6,000 per policy year. As a result, your maximum out-of-pocket cost is $9,500 (being $3,500 + $6,000).
